  1. silver boxing

  3. Ingredients:
  4.  
  5.      1    Blue wire about 1 foot.
  6.      1    Gray wire about 1 foot.
  7.      1    Brown wire about 1 foot.
  8.           (Better to overkill....)
  9.      1    Single pole/Double throw
  10.           (SPDT) switch. (Smallest
  11.           you can find.)
  12.      1    Standard bell phone.
  13.  
  14. Tools:
  15.  
  16.      1    Soldering Iron and Solder.
  17.      1    flat-tip screwdriver.
  18.      1    Very patcient person.

  21. 1:   Take the casing off your phone by
  22.      loosening the two screws
  23.      underneath it.  (Don't take the
  24.      screws all the way off!)
  25.  
  26. 2:   Loosen (But don't remove) the
  27.      screws on the side of the touch-
  28.      tone keypad. (The ones that attach
  29.      it to the mounting bracket.) and
  30.      CAREFULLY remove the keypad from
  31.      the mounting bracket.
  32.  
  33. 3:   You will notice a plastic cover on
  34.      the keypad; seperate the two
  35.      halves and get the out of your
  36.      way. (Don't destroy them, you will
  37.      need them later.)
  38. 4:   Now, look at the top of the pad
  39.      (so the 123 row is facing away,
  40.      and the *0# row is toward you.
  41.      Turn over the keypad. You should
  42.      see a mass of wires, gold plated
  43.      contacts, discrete components, and
  44.      two large doughnut shaped black
  45.      thingies. (These are the coils hat
  46.      make the touch-tone frequencies.
  47.      All you are going to do is connect
  48.      the wires that Ma Bell "Forgot"
  49.      to.)

  51. 5:   Look at the coil on the left (with
  52.      5 solder contacts facing you,
  53.      rather than being perpendicular to
  54.      you.) Count over 4 contacts FROM
  55.      the left (or 2 conacts FROM the
  56.      right) and solder the GRAY wire to
  57.      the fourth post FROM the left.
  58.  
  59. 6:   Solder the other end of the GRAY
  60.      wire to the LEFT pole of the SPDT
  61.      switch.
  62.  
  63. 7:   (The point of no return)..........
  64.      Take a look at the bottom edge of
  65.      the keypad. You should see a row
  66.      of three gold plated contacts (to
  67.      the right of two very large
  68.      capasitors) look at the one on the
  69.      left and GENTELY seperate the two
  70.      touching connectors (They are
  71.      soldered together with a drop of
  72.      solder) and spread them apart.

  74. 8:   Solder the brown wire to the top
  75.      contact (The one futhest from
  76.      you), and solder it to the RIGHT
  77.      pole of SPDT switch.
  78.  
  79. 9:   Now, take the blue wire and solder
  80.      it to the bottom (Closest)
  81.      contact.  Solder the other end of
  82.      this wire to the CENTER pole of
  83.      SPDT switch.

  89. 10:  Now put you phone back together.
  90.      (To make it look professonal, make
  91.      a hole in the plastic top of your
  92.      phone and stick the SPDT switch
  93.      through it.

  95.   Now, (Hopefully) when the switch is
  96. in on position you will have a normal
  97. phone and when it is in the other
  98. position the 3, 6, 9, and # keys (Which
  99. are now the A, B, C, and D keys) will
  100. magically produce the SILVER BOX TONES!

  107.              USING A
  108.            SILVER  BOX
  109. -----------------------------------

  111.   First off, a silver box adds the
  112. four extra tones to your phone that
  113. Ma Bell never told you about. They go
  114. like this:
  115.  
  116.                1  2  3  A
  117.                4  5  6  B
  118.                7  8  9  C
  119.                *  0  #  D
  120.  
  121.   There used to be many places were
  122. you could use SILVER BOX tones, but
  123. now you can only use it in places were
  124. Ma Bell hasn't gotten around to
  125. replacing here old switchboxes,
  126. (4A), or on Autovan.

  128.   Autovan is a special military phone
  129. line, like a mass of private lines
  130. hooked together (I think, but I'm not
  131. sure).

  133.   To see if a specific area has the
  134. old 4A switchboxes try this test:
  135.  
  136.   Call up there directory assistance by
  137. using XXX-555-1212, (Where XXX is
  138. the area code you are check out. Now
  139. hold down the "D" key as soon as you
  140. finish dialing. (If you are using the
  141. SILVER BOX that I showed you how to
  142. make; Switch to SILVER BOX tones
  143. and hold down the "#" key.) The phone
  144. should start ringing and the operator
  145. will answer.
  146.  
  147.   If the operator screams at you to
  148. stop pressing your keypad, then hang
  149. up and try a diffrent areacode. (This
  150. one does not work.)
  151.  
  152.   If you get a pulsing tone the you got
  153. a good line! Now try out different
  154. numbers. 6 and 7 usually form a loop
  155. line and two people with SILVER
  156. BOXES can talk. But some of these
  157. are watched, so DON'T say anything
  158. you wouldn't want your mother to
  159. hear!
  160.  
  161.   I have heard the 213 works but is
  162. being watched. Try out of the way
  163. states like Iowa, Monatana, Wyoming,
  164. ect...
